At three that afternoon Kit texted Meg that Polly had decided to go with Brad to Germany, so she was free for the weekend. Meg texted back saying she’d come with the kids to Capitola, but would wait to drive down Saturday morning to avoid Friday traffic.

JJ and Gabi were happy about going to the beach for the weekend, but Tessa was worried that she’d be missing classes on Saturday and a mandatory rehearsal.

Meg wasn’t sympathetic. “I never get to see you, Tessa, you’re always at the dance studio. You can spend a weekend with your family.”

Saturday morning Tessa sulked in the car on the way to Capitola, but once they descended Highway 17 and turned south on Highway 1, she spotted the ocean and forgot why she was sulking. Suddenly animated, she began to make plans with her, JJ, and Gabi for what they’d do when they reached the beach house. It was hot enough to hit the beach and they wondered if any of their friends would be in Capitola for the weekend, too.

Meg glanced to her right as she drove, drawn to the peekaboo glimpses of the Pacific Ocean through the dark evergreens and Soquel redwoods. The bright line of blue made her glad she’d decided to come with the kids this weekend. In Capitola the kids ran free. The village was small and safe and everyone knew them. Meg was hoping that once they arrived she’d be able to relax. She’d been wound so tight ever since she returned from London. She couldn’t remember when she’d last felt so conflicted.

At the beach house, the kids greeted their aunt Kit with hugs and high fives before racing to the bunk room to drop off their stuff and change.

“Stay together,” Meg warned them as they dashed back down the stairs in swimsuits with towels balled under their arms. “Stay near the lifeguard. Listen to what he says. And no one swims alone. Got it?”

“Got it,” they chorused, the screen door banging behind them and their rubber flip-flops slapping the front steps.

Kit joined Meg on the porch and watched her nieces and nephew run across the lawn toward the beach. “They’re getting so big,” she said, shaking her head. “Even Gabi’s starting to look like a preteen.”

“The idea of Gabi as a teenager terrifies me. Tessa is so focused on her dance that I can’t see her getting in a lot of trouble. But Gabi…it’s going to be boys, partying, and breaking all the rules.” Meg shuddered. “I don’t know how I’m going to get through it.”

Kit’s lips pursed, imagining Gabi gone wild. “You’ll grin and bear it, just the way you did with the rest of us when we were growing up.”

“I didn’t grin and bear it,” Meg retorted drily. “I think I suffered a great deal.”

Kit just laughed.

Kit and Meg were sharing the master bedroom for the weekend and they changed into sundresses they could wear on the beach and around town.

It was almost noon and unusually warm for late May.
